The female of any species gives birth to the offspring. Whether it is laying eggs or giving birth to a fully formed baby, females usually have to do the more difficult task when it comes to reproduction. A male’s role in reproduction is pretty much done after fertilizing the eggs. But seahorses are an exception when it comes to this rule.
With seahorses, it is the male that “gives birth” to the babies. The male’s work isn’t done after fertilization. He takes all the eggs and incubates it in his pouch. You can see the changes visible on the sea horse—his color changes and he respires faster. After a while, he gives birth to over 1800 babies in one go!
